Below is an article written by Jared Wilson about his Space Camp experience.
Have you ever wanted to go to Space Camp? Well, in September, I got to go to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center for a week. I was in the Space Camp program.
My name is Jared Wilson. I am from Holley, New York. I am currently in 7th grade at Holley Middle School. I’m 12 years old.
Earlier in the summer, my mother and I applied for a scholarship from the NYSAER Association. A little while later, we got a phone call from someone from NYSAER saying that I got the scholarship! We were so excited, especially my vision teacher, Mrs. Harper.
When I got to Space Camp, everyone was very excited. There were many different people from all over the United States there. After we checked in, we took our luggage up to our rooms. The rooms all have 6 beds, and a desk. We each got our own little lockers too. Then, we went to the cafeteria for a snack. It was great! Then, we went into the Challenger auditorium for a small presentation about the camp, and what we would do while we were there. After that, we got to hang out for a little bit, and meet some of the people there.
The next day, we started training for our first mission. I was the station commander. It was really cool. We went into a small room that was designed to look like a space station. We didn’t get to complete everything that we were supposed to do, but we got pretty far. We also landed the shuttle safely.
We also had another mission. During this mission, I was a mission specialist. Three of my friends and I got to go inside of a life-size replica of a space shuttle cockpit. There were all sorts of switches, buttons, and keyboards. While being a mission specialist, I got to go on a space walk! It was a little hard, because I was hanging from this giant machine, and I was afraid that I would fall out. It was also hard to move around with the machine. During the space walk, I wore a space suit and helmet. The helmet had a fan built right into it, and two lights on the side so I could see what I was doing. After the missions, we got to go to the space museum. There was a tornado watch while we were there, and everyone had to go into the museum. There, I made a new friend. After the tornado watch, we went to the rock wall. My new friend and I tried to climb it, but we only made it a little way up before we had to jump down. The harnesses that we were wearing when we jumped made it feel like we were almost floating!
During camp, we also got to a lot of fun things in the Astrotrek building. We got to make rockets (which we later on launched), ride in an M.A.T. (Multi-Access Trainer) that spun you around, and a big machine that you could control using two joysticks.
Overall, Space Camp was a great experience. I learned a lot about space, and how NASA and other space agencies get people up into space, and even what it’s like to be an astronaut. I hope that many other people get the awesome chance to come to space camp for a week.
